US Navy Chief Petty & Officer Cutlass

We are proud to offer this accurate reproduction of a beautiful and rare United States 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass. As was standard in all branches of the U. S. Armed Services, Naval Officers had an option to purchase Non Regulation Swords or Cutlasses.  Officers while aboard a warship preferred the short 26 inch cutlass to the longer decorative 32" - 34" sword.  The model of choice was an 1860 Naval Cutlass incised "USN" (United States Navy) into a beautiful scalloped shell design stamped into the guard. The Ames Sword Company catalog refers to this model as the "Officer's Cutlass" and since then this designation has been used.

Navy Chief & Officer Cutlass 1860 Regulation Enlisted Navy Cutlass 1860

The Chief Petty Officer

This U. S. 1860 Officer's Cutlass was authorized for use by both the Chief Petty Officer and any Regular Officer.  The highest rank that an enlisted person can achieve is the Chief Petty Officer rank, and while the Chief Petty Officer is technically an enlisted person (in charge of all enlisted persons), the Chief Petty Officer, as well as all Officers were AUTHORIZED to wear this Officer's Cutlass.
The standard
1860 Naval Cutlass was furnished to the enlisted men at no cost but the Chief Petty Officer could purchase and wear this 1860 Officer's Cutlass.  All Regular Officers had to purchase their own sword.

The 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass features the USN embellished polished solid brass scalloped
shell basket, with a comfortable leather grip with twisted wire.  The blade is made of tempered
high carbon steel and has a regulation blade length of 26 inches (66 cm).  This Officer's Cutlass
measures 31 3/4 inches (80.6 cm) overall and weighs 2.0 pounds (0.9 kg).  The blade is stamped
with the authentic Maker's / Inspector's Marks.

The blade is a 0.200 inch (5.1 mm) thick and 1.16 inch (2.9 cm) wide and can be custom engraved
with up to three lines of text.  Please specify the desired location and orientation of the engraving when ordering.
The leather scabbard is complete with the leather "Frog" for hanging from a belt.  The leather scabbard has the
blackened regulation copper rivets on the backside with a finished complete historically accurate leather tip.
The leather scabbard and frog weighs 12.7 ounces (360 grams). The 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass comes with an
unsharpened blade, just like the extremely rare antique cutlasses produced by the original manufacturers.
However, you can easily sharpen the blade yourself.
The U.S. 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass with the frog and leather scabbard sells for only $170.00.
